Contented in Crete!

Akti Corali – Heraklion

As we arrived in Heraklion we were met by Alex [George’s business partner] and we asked for a room for an extra night [tonight] and of course, we were accommodated into a beautiful room looking out toward the sea of Crete.

The Akti Corali is our home-away-from-home in Heraklion [Ammoudara] and is located right on the Sea of Crete. The wonderful staff [George included] is always helpful, happy and friendly. Everything is always clean, and smells like fresh salt air!

Rooms are cleaned and freshened daily and breakfast is fantastic! The hot and cold buffet is an awesome treat each morning with Katerina taking special care in the kitchen and a beautiful setting.

The Hotel has been updated each year for the last few years and the improvements continue. It is now a modern, seaside hotel with a great pool area, snack bar, and an incredible beach! Well done George and Alex! Low turnover of staff make this family hotel seem like home each time we come back…

With so many restaurants close by we had a hard time choosing but we always tend to visit old favorites and the try a new one for good measure.

The first night in Heraklion we decided to return to a little restaurant close by that we had been to before on previous trips – the Mimar. It looked about the same with a few tables lined up toward the street and a large table with a family party. We found a spot and sat down. The wait service was good and we ordered a couple of our favorite dishes. Needless to say we love coming back to some of the same places each time we visit Greece and this is one of them. Calamari, greek salad, and a serving of tasty treats with some Ouzo made a nice meal.

Aris Katerina was our choice for the second night. We felt right at home as we walked in and the owner seated us at a lovely table ready to tell us what was cooking in the kitchen and what was ‘special’ that night. We decided on moussaka, greek salad (as usual) and a beautiful portion of calamari! It was worth the wait! This was delicious and beat out most other moussakas by a 10/1 ratio! Highly recommended!

Thalassini Aura, also a restaurant we have visited before, was the choice for my birthday dinner. Again, the food was great, the service was wonderful and the atmosphere was well… celebratory!
